More on Networking

I have found and use two excellent websites that allow you to network and connect with others. The are:
  1. LinkedIn
  2. Plaxo

Both websites can be used as a resource in finding new employment. We have listed these websites on the right-hand column of our website as well as links to articles and job search websites.

Good luck!

Try Networking

The natural stresses of looking for a job are amplified when recovering from a lay-off. To ameliorate this stress you can shift burdens to your contacts. Contact old friends, old co-workers, family members, and see if they know of anything or know of anyone who can help. You may not find a job immediately, but this approach places you on the fast track. For example, I called my brother-in-law and he got me in touch with his friend who is in the IT business. He did not have any openings at his company, but he did get his recruiter that services IT companies in the area to help me out. Although my brother-in-law did not solve my problem, he opened up a channel with his friend who opened up a channel within his network. You will be exposed to opportunities you never imagined. I have others actively looking for jobs that fit my salary, geographical preference, etc. Explore your networks and share your successes, failures, and comments.

Play the Laid Off Card

I started going through all of my bills the other day. I wanted to categorize them so I knew exactly where my money was going and what areas I might be able to cut back on.

Here's some positive feedback that might help you:

Local Cable Bill. I currently have cable, internet, and phone all bundled together. I was anxious to get to what I felt was a manageable price, so called to see what services I get rid of. After telling customer service that I had recently been laid off, he told me about a special deal they could offer me for a year. I was shocked. A big reduction in the monthly price! Something that I feel I can handle during the job search.

Doctor Bills. I called one and explained my situation and they took 20% off the bill. Another took $10 off the bill (hey, ten bucks is ten bucks!), and yet another put me on a payment plan that will only cost dollars a month.

I'm still calling others to see what I can work out. But so far, it has been very advantageous to play the laid off card.

If any of you have any ideas or successes, please share.

What's your story?

Here's mine...

For several months I've had a gut feeling that things were not going well at my job. Our parent company came in removed the CEO and CFO and put one of their own in charge. Following this, there were massive layoffs. I felt lucky thinking I weathered the storm. However, to my dismay, on Monday, June 14th, 2008, I was invited into the new CEO's office. This was after he had just laid-off our CIO, and one of my peers who was the Director of Applications in the IT department. I was greeted and asked to sit down at the guest table. I was informed that there was an HR representative on the phone. "Here we go," I thought. Ten years of blood, sweat, and tears all boiled down to this crowing moment. After the half hour discussion of why this was happening and discussing my departure, I was escorted like a criminal back to my office to collect my belongings before being escorted to the front door. Wow!

In one sense, I was relieved that my time with the company had ended. It had been very unpleasant for the couple of years, and I had started looking for a new job anyway.

The flip side was that I couldn't believe they laid me off. Didn't they know what I did for the company? What about all the people that worked for me? What was I to do for money after the measly severance package was exhausted?

Anger, sadness, relief, disappointment, anxiety are just several of the emotions that I felt during that lovely day. These feelings persist several days later.

So here we go. I've created this blog as a way to put my thoughts on paper, as well as a way to share my story with you as I move forward trying to figure out the next chapter of my life. I hope you all will share your stories, tips, tricks and whatever else you feel would help all of us who have been laid off, fired, displaced, right-sized, etc.

Good luck to all of us!
